THE SEVENTH ANNUAL CHRISTY AWARDS dinner was held July 8, at the Denver Marriott to honor the best in Christian fiction for 2006. Best-selling author Bret Lott, whose Jewel (Pocket Books) was an Oprah’s Book Club Selection in 1999, gave the keynote address, and Tyndale House Publishers’ Dan Balow hosted the event. THE ADVANCED WRITERS & SPEAKERS Assoc. (AWSA) presented its Golden Scroll Awards at its annual awards banquet July 9, at the Denver Athletic Club. Best-selling author Ellie Kay gave the keynote address, and author Lindsey O’Connor hosted the event. AWSA, an outreach of Right to the Heart Ministries, consists of 250-plus top Christian women authors who publish and speak nationally.

Golden Scroll Publisher of the Year— Revell. According to author Kathi Macias, “Revell treated me as a valued and appreciated member of their ministry team from the get-go. I truly believe they want to honor God.”

Golden Scroll Editor of the Year—Liz Heaney (Liz Heaney Editorial Services). Author Janet Holm McHenry said, “When I think of Liz, I picture her in front of me, dragging me through a manuscript when I don’t ‘get it;’ pushing me when I don’t feel like it; and beside me, as my friend, encouraging and helping me believe that I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength.”

Golden Scroll Fiction Editor of the Year—Julee Schwarzburg (Multnomah). “I’ve done eight novels with Julee and have seen she has great respect for her writers,” said award-winning novelist Gayle Roper. “She treats us with grace and a gentle hand, asking always for our best, but listening carefully to us, too.”

AWSA founder Linda Evans Shepherd and AWSA Steering Committee President Eva Marie Everson presented the Golden Scroll AWSA Member of the Year award to author Jill Rigby for her work with the child victims of Hurricane Katrina through her letter-writing and school-supply campaign, Project to My Friend. “Jill personally reached out to thousands of children of the storm and made a difference. She is an example of Christ’s love in action,” Shepherd said.

The God Allows U-Turns Project announced Heather Gemmen its God Allows U-Turns—Strength of Choice award-win-ner. Gemmen wrote Startling Beauty: My Journey From Rape to Restoration (Life Jour-ney/Cook). The award is given to a person in the publishing industry who has shown courage and faith in the face of formidable life situations.
