Bible Merchandising System

Nelson’s felt-needs

system continues to grow in popularity—and

increase retail sales.

>>> Nearly a year has passed since Thomas Nelson Publishers launched its innovative felt-needs Bible Merchandising System at the 2007 ADVANCE in Indianapolis. Since its inception, more than 150 stores have signed on for the program, and according to Nelson Bibles Sr. VP and Group Publisher Wayne Hastings, many more are requesting it, hoping to launch it in time to impact Christmas sales.

Those numbers, Hastings added, don’t include the test program with Family Christian Stores now under way.

The new merchandising plan radically changes the way Bibles are merchandised in Christian-retail stores. Rather than grouping Bibles by translation, Bibles are categorized according to customer felt needs.

Christians wanting a
solid foundation to help
them explain their faith
will find a wealth of
support in The Apologet-
ics Study Bible
(HCSB).
More than 130 articles

by such articulate
defenders of the faith as

Charles Colson, Norman Geisler, Albert Mohler Jr., Lee Strobel, and Ravi Zacharias tackle evolution, human cloning, open theism, Mormonism, salvation by works, common characteristics of cults, and more. A table of contents and an index helpfully guide readers to pages where they’ll find articles pertaining to various theological challenges.

Introductions and footnotes to each book of the Bible argue the re-liability and truthfulness of Scripture. “Twisted Scripture Notes” briefly explain common doctrinal errors made by various religious movements. Readers also get biographical sketches of famous apologists ranging from Origen to C.S. Lewis, a world-religions chart, full-color maps,

and more.

Helpful, thorough, and laid out in such a manner that the Bible text is never obscured or made secondary to supportive text, The Apologetics Study Bible

is an invaluable tool for Christians serious about defending their faith in a pluralistic, relativistic society.

The Complete
Guide to the Bible
Stephen M. Miller / Barbour
Publishing
Subject: Bible Reference
p $19.97 ISBN: 9781597893749
Miller says he gazed
out his window a great
deal while writing this
book, not to goof off,
but to find new ways to
express old truths. His
intent was to present
the Bible to the uniniti-
ated without resorting

to Bible scholar lingo. The result is a fresh, entertaining, and very readable introduction to Bible history, cultures, and theology that will appeal not only to new or non-Christians, but also to those who’ve been in the church for years.

The Complete Guide to the Bible is an ambitious project, but readers enjoying the gorgeous format, photos, sidebars, and illustrations and entertained and instructed by

Miller’s lively, insightful, and often humorous text probably won’t be aware of the effort that went into the book’s creation. Most impressive is the amount of valuable information given on each page. Within the first few pages, Miller introduces the Bible in general, the Old Testament in particular, the book of Genesis, how we got the Old Testament, oral vs. written accounts, creation care, and theories regarding original sin and why we were created. Clearly, he doesn’t tackle any of these in depth, yet each item links with others to create a richly textured understanding of Bible times, peoples, and places and how they impact us today.

To his credit, Miller doesn’t avoid sensitive

topics. He cites opposing theories regarding creation, hell, and even the virgin birth. The final page in the book, while not exactly a happy ending, explains why the concept of hell is such a challenge for Bible experts. Miller leaves it up to readers to determine whether it’s a real place with real fire, complete annihilation of the unrepentant, or a short-term punishment resulting eventually in complete reconciliation with God.

Rich in information, beautiful in layout, and exceptional in providing a lively understanding of God’s work throughout the ages,

The Complete Guide to the Bible is a stellar introduction to the Bible for general readers.
